In a time when children’s voices were
silenced, a courageous Italian-American
girl sparks a controversial trial when
she accuses her stepfather of an
unspeakable crime.
Chickadee is based on the real life
experiences of the paternal grandmother
of screenwriters Lora Lee and Tom
Ecobelli whose childhood abuse and
exploitation sparked a landmark court
case in upstate New York in 1923.
Drawing upon inner strength beyond her
years, young Laurina bravely faced
racism and discrimination to defy the
odds and bring her abusive stepfather to
justice.
In so doing, she united a once divided
community and inspired countless victims
of domestic violence. Her struggle
parallels the plight of many of today’s
immigrants as they suffer similar
injustices. |
